Sweden is a country that’s cultural influences both on the world and on its people stem more from modern times as opposed to historically. Sweden is recognised international for its contribution to the film industry, being the home country of arguably one of the most influential film makers of all time, Ingmar Bergman. Films such as The Seventh Seal and Cries & Whispers shaped the film industry of the 1950’s and went on to affect the work of many directors of the future. Ingmar Bergman Sweden is of course not only famous for makers of film but also their stars with such names as Greta Garbo, Ingrid Bergman and Anita Ekburd all gracing the movie theatres of the world. Sweden’s cultural influence on the international music industry is nothing short of phenomenal for a country that is not considered as predominantly English speaking. In the 1970’s and 1980’s the band ABBA recorded a string of number one hits going on to sell more than 300 million records. This was a catalyst for the bands to follow such as Roxette, Ace of Base, and the Cardigans to name but a few. Music in Sweden is not limited only to pop though; Gothenburg is one of the international centres of Death Metal and host to the annual festival of Metal that attracts both bands and audiences from around the world. Sweden’s affect on the architectural movements of the world has been considerable. Home to some of the most impressive modern structures in the world, Sweden were the pioneers of the 1930’s Functionalist movement. The architectural values of clean lines that the Functionalists followed are considered by many to be the building blocks of most modern architecture of today. Sweden is home to the Nobel Peace prize named after the famous Swedish inventor of Dynamite. The people of Sweden are considered to be both humble and modest and frown upon any expressions of elitism. With strong values of equality the Swedish people pride themselves on being a nation with open views and tolerance. Sweden is country with a hard work ethic and very little in the way of corruption.
