The best place to start on any tour of places to see in Stockholm would definetley have to be Gamla Stan, the old town. A great place to visit on foot (it is barely 500 metres in diameter) the wonderful 17th century buildings and winding medieval streets have been preserved to an incredible degree so much so that any visitor could almost be forgived for thinking they had been shot back in time. Gamla Stan is home to some of the most famous buildings in Stockholm such as the Riddarholm Church and the largest Royal Palace in the world still occupied by the head of state King Carl XVI Gustav. The palace is open to the public and offers a wonderful opportunity to witness the royal apartments and state hall first hand. The 13th Century Storkyrkan Cathedral and the 20th Century Nobel Museum are both located in Gamla Stan.

Skansen Open air museum has long been the most popular attraction in Stockholm, with a number of exhibitions and concerts held throughout the year this is a great place to get a ‘feel’ for Sweden, its people and its past. If you visit Stockholm during Christmas then Skansen is the place to be for Stockholm’s famous Christmas Market.
Located in the centre of Stockholm is The City hall an imposing brick structure and home to the annual Nobel Prize awards. Take a trip up the tower (unfortunately only open in the summer months) for a view across Stockholm that you will never forget!

For those visitors looking for some more modern examples of architecture in Stockholm then you can’t go far wrong by taking a visit to either Sergels torg (Sergels Square) and its 37 metre tall glass pillar at the centre or the Stockholm Globe Theatre with its 85 metre high golf ball form.
