Fondly known as the City of parks, the cultural scene in Malmo is a very understated and relaxed. Malmö has the highest proportion of individuals of non-Scandinavian extraction of any Swedish city and is a city of sharp social divide and high unemployment.

Ingmar Bergman

Most of the culture in the city is centred around the Municipal Theatre, inaugurated in 1944 and probably the most important centre of theatrical production in Sweden. The Chief stage director of the theatre in the 1950’s was the director Ingmar Bergman and the legacy that he left behind has insured that the theatre continues to produce a rich vein of contemporary and exciting theatre productions.
