Gotland is a place of incredible natural beauty and can indeed be enjoyed by merely sitting and enjoying the scenery and peacefulness that fills the air.
Gotland is Viking country and home to countless ruins, churches and historical places of interest including the medieval town of Visby. If you are visiting Gotland then Visby will no doubt be on your agenda as it is the main town of the island. Be sure to take in the old wall fortifications of Visby and the powder tower (Kruttornet) the oldest monument in Visby. The town of Visby is a wonderful mesh of winding cobblestone streets that will most definitely capture the imagination of all its visitors and any visit would definetley not be complete without a trip to the St Nicolai Church Ruins in the centre of town.

There is more to Gotland than just visby though, miles of rustic country side and craggy beaches will stir any amount of emotions in the hearts of visitors to the island. The East coast is the site of the famous 'Raukarna' limestone pillars that line the coast including ‘Hoburgsgubben’ also known as the old man of Hoburg, one of the stone trolls of which many tales are told.
Visby is renowned for its number of medieval churches scattered throughout the countryside. Two of the more notable churches on the island are ‘Kallungens Kyrka’ built in the 13th century and ‘Oja Kyrka’ famous for its 14th Century statue of the Madonna.

One of the most popular attractions on Gotland is the Lummelunda Caves a result of millions of years of natural excavation. There are also other caves located on Stora Karlson, a small island located off the west coast of Gotland and reachable via a short 40 minute ferry ride from Klintehamn.
For those looking for a historical experience in Gotland a wonderful Viking village has been set up in Tofta that gives visitors the opportunity to experience how the ancient inhibitors of Gotland lived.
