Cheap Stockholm Hotels Print E-mail

ImageStockholm, the capital of Sweden, is located where the Baltic Sea meets Lake Mälaren, and the city center is situated on Riddarfjärden Bay. Called the "Venice of the North," more than 30 percent of the city is composed of waterways, while the other is gorgeous urban parks and greenery. The balmy weather makes it an ideal tourist destination at any time of year.
There are a multitude of cheap hotels in Stockholm that will provide the traveller with ample comfort, quality and convenience for taking in all that the beautiful city has to offer. The following are noted for their affordability and attractiveness:

Best for Environmentally Friendly

The Best Western Kom Hotel, Döbelnsgatan 17, is owned by the YMCA and is within walking distance of great restaurants, nightlife and shopping.
The newly renovated hostel offers beds for up to 20 in two separate rooms, each with 8 or 12 beds, which can be booked together or separately. Because it is affiliated with the YMCA, a sauna and shower in the gym are available, as well. This green hostel is certified by the Nordic Ecolabel. Amenities include: free coffee/tea in lobby, Wi-Fi, access to lockers and refrigerator, breakfast buffet for minimal cost, computers in lobby, and bed linens.
The hostel is only a 15-minute walk from the central main station, two stops with the metro. Just five minutes away is Drottninggaten, the central shopping area.
A wonderful place to have dinner near the hostel is Andalucia, at Döbelnsgatan 79. This modern Spanish restaurant emphasizes fresh seafood and oh-so-trendy tapas. Specialties include: tortilla de patata (potato cakes), deep-fried goat cheese with fresh fruit and fig marmalade, ceviche, paella and mixed seafood platter for two. Don't pass up on Andalucía’s wonderful Spanish wines. A true gem.

Best for Tea on the Balcony

A room with a view! Hotel Stureparken is small with nine rooms, all reasonably priced. Views of a nearby park or on the balcony make this a true steal. There is a very cosy breakfast room, where a free breakfast is served every morning and tea/coffee in the afternoons.
All rooms have shared bathrooms/showers in the hallway with the exception of the apartment. It has its own kitchen and bathroom.
Being so close to Sturplan means proximity to fabulous restaurants and shopping. Do try the Undici Restaurant and Bar at Sturegatan 22. Hosting a first-class service, this restaurant specializes in Swedish and Italian food, and was rated one of "Sweden's Best Tables" in 2006. This is a place to be pampered in both spirit and palate.

Best for a Hearty Breakfast

Vanadis Hotel and Bath, at Sveavägen 142, has 53 cosy rooms, all non-smoking and include a desk, cable TV, sheets and towels. Showers and bathrooms are in the hallway.
The free breakfast is a delight. It includes: white bread, Swedish bread, cornflakes, jam/butter, yoghurt, bacon, cheese, tomato and cucumber, milk, coffee, hot chocolate and tea.
In the reception area, there is coffee as well as a beverage machine, and the decor is in shades of blue, marine-style. The hotel is only 10 minutes to the nearest metro.
It is easy to find good food in the neighbourhood, and one restaurant to try is Mongolia Djingis Khan at Sveavägen 36. Stockholm's first Mongolian restaurant, it has a diverse menu with seafood, meat and vegetarian options. If you've never had Mongolian barbeque, this is the place to be initiated.

Best for easy access to Transportation

Wasa Park Hotel, at Sankt Eriksplan 1, is just the place for the big-city fan who wants a bit relief from the big-city hustle and bustle when it's time to rest.
Close connections (and just 10 minutes to the central station) to the center of Stockholm make this a wonderful getaway and rest spot, with its 19th-century architecture.
All rooms have a view of a park or the peaceful back yard of the hotel. Showers and toilets are in the hallway. Each room has a television and phone, and a complimentary breakfast is included. It offers coffee/tea, bread, butter, cheese and jam as well as juice.
Close to the hotel, guests can enjoy dinner at Helenes Krog, located at Sankt Eriksgatan 87. A very warm and welcoming bar and restaurant, guests can dine by candlelight and then enjoy the adjoining nightclub for a fun and unforgettable night on the town. Menu items at Helenes krog include: garlic marinated lamb fillet, scampi Jack Daniels, salmon fajitas and escargots.
